    Posted: 21 February 2010 at 11:34am
I have synth with an internal 16 track sequencer that we use on stage to add synth parts to some of our tunes.  The biggest problem we are having is a consistent volume sequence to sequence.  We sat down a couple of times and played each tune through the PA and mixed and adjusted volume levels, but they still are inconsistent enough that I have to spent quite a bit of time on stage adjusting volume.   Any suggestions on how to get a consistent volume?

The sequencer is simply playing the sound patches that are on your keyboard, right? Have you noticed much of a volume level change when you switch between sound patches when playing the keyboard without the sequencer?

I have a Yamaha Motif, and I have noticed that some of the sound patches are louder or softer than others. My guess is that the only realistic solution would be to have a soundman out front correcting the volume levels for each song. Otherwise, you can change the volume on the fly from your keyboard, but you will never know if it is too loud or too soft in the mains.

Yes, the sequencer is simply playing the patches on the synth.  And, Yes, I have noticed that some of the patches have significant volume differences.  I've spent alot of time mixing each individual sequence to get a good (I think) balance per tune, but again getting a consistent level for all sequences has been the challenge.

So until we can afford a soundman you're thinking that I'm stuck riding the volume fader?

You may be able to edit the volume of each individual patch depending on which keyboard you have. This would involve going into the edit mode, adjusting the volume parameter of each patch, and then saving it to memory.

Hope this helps!

That seems like more work than it should be :)  I can adjust the volume of each of the 3-16 tracks per sequence and get a nice mix within the sequence.  But I have 20 different song files that I'd like to have mixed to a similar volume...that's the challenge.   Does that make sense or am I missing what you're saying?

Two solutions, 1 get a passive volume pedal, 2 get a compressor.

There will be no volume consistency between different patches / voices / instruments call 'em what you will, you could spend forever and a day tweaking each patch, or you could run it through a compressor.
Sure, the guy with the expensive gear and the great tone is cool, but the guy with the junky gear and the great tone is a awesome.
